Seven Types of Shots

A "shot" refers to the action of hitting the shuttlecock with the racket in an attempt to make it cross over the net and land on the opponent's court. There are SEVEN types of shots in badminton: serve, clear, drop, lift, drive, smash, and net. These shots are used strategically during a game to outmaneuver and outscore the opponent.

Clear

The clear shot involves hitting the shuttlecock high and deep into the opponent's court. There are two types of clear shots in badminton - the flat clear and the high clear.

The flat clear is a more attacking shot where the shuttlecock is hit with a flat trajectory to the back of the opponent's court. It is usually used to counter a fast and low shot from the opponent or to put pressure on the opponent's defense. The key to a good flat clear is to hit the shuttlecock with power and precision. The player should hit the shuttlecock at the highest point possible and use a flat racket face to create a straight trajectory.

On the other hand, the high clear is a more defensive shot where the shuttlecock is hit high up into the air with a high trajectory to the back of the opponent's court. It is usually used to gain time and space to recover from a difficult position on the court or to force the opponent to move back and create an opportunity for the player to attack. The key to a good high clear is to hit the shuttlecock with accuracy and height. The player should use an overhead throwing action and hit the shuttlecock with a slightly tilted racket face to create a high and deep trajectory.

Both the flat clear and high clear shots are important in badminton as they provide different tactical advantages depending on the situation in the game. A skilled player should be able to execute both types of clear shots effectively to have a strong defensive game and to create opportunities to attack.
