Seven Types of Shots

A "shot" refers to the action of hitting the shuttlecock with the racket in an attempt to make it cross over the net and land on the opponent's court. There are SEVEN types of shots in badminton: serve, clear, drop, lift, drive, smash, and net. These shots are used strategically during a game to outmaneuver and outscore the opponent.

Smash

The smash shot is a powerful shot hit downwards with force, often used to finish a point or creating weak returns that can be exploited for a winning shot. The smash shot is usually used in response to a high clear or a defensive lift shot from the opponent.

There are different types of smash shots in badminton, including the stick smash, the slice smash, and the power smash.

The stick smash is a straight and powerful smash that is hit with a high racket position and a short backswing. The player should use a wrist snap and a quick acceleration to hit the shuttlecock with maximum power and speed. The stick smash is usually used to create a quick and powerful winner, catching the opponent off guard and unable to return the shuttlecock.

The slice smash is a more deceptive and angled smash that is hit with a slicing action, similar to a tennis slice shot. The player should use a side-to-side swing and a slicing motion to hit the shuttlecock with a diagonal trajectory and spin, making it difficult for the opponent to anticipate the direction of the shot. The slice smash is usually used to create a sharp angle and exploit the opponent's weak side.

The power smash is a more traditional and powerful smash that is hit with a long backswing and a high jump, similar to a spike in volleyball. The player should use a full body swing and a jump to hit the shuttlecock with maximum power and speed, aiming for the opponent's weaker side or body. The power smash is usually used to create a powerful and decisive winner, putting maximum pressure on the opponent's defense.

A skilled player should be able to execute all types of smash shots effectively to keep the opponent guessing and to create opportunities to win points. However, the smash shot should be used with control and precision, as it can also create opportunities for the opponent to counter-attack if not executed properly.
